  • QF to commence services to DFW (May 16), drops SFO (May 14)

Qantas will apply to the consumer watchdog for permission to co-ordinate its trans-Pacific operations with American Airlines, as it dumps direct flights to San Francisco in favour of Texas.

Dallas/Fort Worth, in Texas, is American Airlines largest hub airport.

Qantas said today it would begin direct flights to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) on May 16, after ending flights to San Francisco on May 14.

The Dallas/Fort Worth service would provide Qantas with access to American Airlines regional network, meaning it could offer codeshare services to another 13 destinations in the US and three in Mexico.

Qantas said it would operate four times a week direct from Sydney to Dallas/Fort Worth starting May 16, using a three-class Boeing 747.

The return leg will fly through Brisbane.
A pity... SFO is a lovely airport to fly out of, especially with being able to board directly from the BA lounge. I can see a lot of LAX connections in my future...

KeithMEL, is that such a bad thing?

Wow! This is horrible news for SFO. But with the money they charge the airlines, it's not unexpected. Also understand this will help QF feed AA's flights.

And people keep saying the A380 is coming to SFO...

Ha. I love LA as a destination but connecting at LAX can sometimes be a hassle. Still, MEL-LAX-SFO cf MEL-SYD-SFO makes little difference to me on the whole, I suppose.

The QF flight to SFO has more often than not been half empty when I've been on it. So not a surprising decision at all. The only time it's been full was when the A380s to LAX were out of commission and they had to re-route people via SFO.
