it means the load (pax & cargo) on that specific flight and the weather conditions. If its full and lots of headwinds, you may not get much allowance beyond your allocated limit.

Forgot to add. Depending on what status; if any; you have with SQ as well.

I'm only a lowly silver member but apparently I get an extra 5 kg. So I went to Japan with 30kg, while I was only allowed 25kg, at check in the lady told me to make sure on the way back I had 25kg. I didn't have to pay for the excess.

AFAIK Silver members don't get any extra allowance, only Gold and above.

You *may* be able to get away with 1 or 2 kg, depending on how friendly the check in staff are. I once got away with 24 in KUL before I got gold, but that depends on your luck.

Well, at the service centre at ION on Orchard, and at check-in, they told me I was allowed 25kg because of my status. Only telling you what I was told by SQ.

If you are student, you can call in to request additional allowance 5-7kg. As 9V-JKL has mentioned, status does matter as well. The higher your tier is, the more leeway you get.

Sometimes it depends on the check-in staff. Some are a pain. Once a lady tries to charge me 5kg for being 7kg over at about AUD$120 to KUL from MEL. I called her bluff and said ok I'll pay. But after completing my check-in she never charged me.

Not strict in my experience. Had some overweight bags at check in for LAX, lady and check in counter used total weight rule instead of per piece rule (ie 2x baggages at 23kg, so 46kg total instead of strict 23kg max per bag).

Few kgs should not be a problem, at most you just transfer some stuff to your carry-on bag, if you meet the occasional strict person.

I still think airlines should make the person get on the scales with their luggage...

                            That's discrimination.

It's actually called sarcasm, but I'll let you go on that one.
