Looking at the seats that are "for sale", there aren't to many per airplane unless that will change in the future and they will add more seats to that category like many US airlines are doing.

Personally, it won't affect my choice of airline yet when flying in Y.
Nowadays I have come to accept that flying, especially in Y, isn't what it used to be on probably any carrier, though SQ's service in Y is still one of the best out there.
I have no more expectations except to get from A to B esepcially when flying in North America.
I just try to get an aisle seat and enjoy my flight, not thinking to much that I could have had a better seat etc.

That also translates that I have very little or no loyalty for North American carriers.
I pick what suits me best; time, price and service, finding that in this past year the money I have saved by not using my "preferred carrier" was enough for a few "free" tickets.
FFP is almost at the end of my list whereas in the "old" days it would dominate my choice of carrier.

I use SQ for my flights to Asia which I try to usually do in C.
This now has changed or will change more and more as I have become more price conscious and what I believe to still be a superiour service on SQ, comes as a secondary choice.

However, saying all this I would still choose a carrier like SQ even if I had to pay a little extra over something like UA or most US carriers when travelling longhaul.

Currently I am a KF*G (if that changes anything) but I am very tempted to cancel my booking and go with another airline.

Any thoughts? What are other worthy options to go from SYD to SFO?

First of all I would check if the seats that are "for sale" on your flights (SQ2 and SQ15) are seats that you would have normally selected and would have received.
There is a good chance that this is not the case.
Even if it is the case, would you be able to get these preferred seats on another carrier, like CX, QF, NZ....?
If the answer is yes and the fare is same or lower or even higher if it's worth it to you then I would consider another carrier.

The only reason I would change is to get a more direct route and as Rejuvenated mentioned QF comes to mind and also NZ.
I personally would also stay clear of UA for such a long flight.

A saying comes to mind and I am not sure if I remember it correctly but it's something like: "Don't through the baby out with the bathwater"

Funnily enough the upper deck seats on the A380 are still free for all, which is a good thing I guess.

It just doesn't make sense, I got a short while until my ticketing deadline. But I must say that I am really disappointed.

But if you get on the plane when beginning your journey on SQ and feel not happy about what they did, it might spoil a big part of your trip.
In that case rather choose an airline you will be enjoying to fly with and don't feel the way you feel about SQ right now.
But maybe after you sleep on it you might feel different tomorrow, maybe you will have forgiven SQ and all will be well.
Also see if it is worth it to you to you to spend the SIN$ 75.00 to get the seats you want.

To me this implies SQ is moving down the track of a budget airline... chipping away at the items previously offered in the price of the ticket & charging extra... Maybe from 1st Nov next year we will need to pay to check in baggage too?

I also think SQ could have offered this to KF Elite Gold & PPS as a benefit... however they chose to charge even their most loyal customers.

To me it comes across as petty. And not what I would expect from SQ.

For me it means that on my trip in Jan I will need to pay $75 each for the seats that I prefer on SQ220, SQ2 and SQ15.

In the short term, it is not a deal-breaker.. merely an annoyance (esp travelling to the US with the Australian dollar as it is now).

In the long term I don't know. It gives me an incentive to try other airlines and I won't go out of my way to fly SQ as I have in the past.

Which is a shame really, I have a tonne of great memories on SQ (including SQ380 last year).
