  • SIA sells 5 Boeing 777 planes to Pembroke Group with leaseback deal

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stori...357570/1/.html Singapore Airlines (SIA) has sold five Boeing 777 aircraft to Pembroke Group, a wholly-owned unit of Standard Chartered Bank. No financial terms were disclosed, with SIA saying the details were confidential. As part of the deal, SIA is leasing back the aircraft, which are still operating in its fleet. The leases have various terms and include options to extend.

    Will they be reregistered ?

These could be any of 9V-SQA through 9V-SQH, 9V-SRA through 9V-SRE, and 9V-SYA through 9V-SYE. I believe those are all the non-AVOD aircraft. All 18 of these will be sold in similar deals very soon and are probably not candidates for refitting with the new business class -- even though most will remain in the fleet for a few more years.

Not until after they leave the SQ fleet.

        3 x 777-200
        1 x 777-300

        Registration numbers not disclosed.

Could someone educate me on the purpose of leaseback?

            Tax and/or accounting AFAIK.

Basically, the end result is that SQ in effect "borrow" money from the new owner but (due to, e.g., tax savings by the new owner which SQ get part of the benefit of) SQ pay a lower rate of interest than they would if it was a straightforward loan from the new owner to SQ secured on the aircraft.

If I remember correctly, all of SIA's B772s are of the -ER variant. The regional 772s have been derated by computer but are able to be "rerated" by a few changes.

I assume by this list that one of the 9V-SV* aircraft is included in the leaseback deal, and the other 772s included are regional.

yep. Pembroke classified the derated 777-200ERs as 777-200s, so it's likely that they have adopted SQ's operational nomenclature wholesale.

Perhaps its just a lazy way to differentiate the Trent 884 powered 772s from the Trent 892 powered ones.

Just digging this up again. If anyone is interested.

Someone just emailed me the registrations of the 777s that were sold and leased back.

                  9V-SQI (777-212ER)
                  9V-SRK (777-212ER)
                  9V-SRN (777-212ER)
                  9V-SVH (777-212ER)
                  9V-SYK (777-312)

That's a surprise! Those all have AVOD. They all joined the fleet in 2002 or later, so this is purely a financing deal and has nothing to do with aircraft leaving the fleet.

Usually, when SQ sell aircraft, they do so a few years in advance with a short-term lease back arrangement. For example, all of the remaining passenger JumboJets have already been sold.

Yes you are right, all the jumbos have been sold but SIA still owns them till the date they agreed on letting them go. I know because i saw the Registration cert and it still put SIA as the owner.
