Singapore airlines too expensive

Just for info:

A 2 way ticket to maa costs:

$403 on Air india
$415 on jet airways

But a ridiculously expensive $590 on SQ.

All in Y.

Reading about singapore airlines’s losses and increasing cost cutting measures, i wonder whether charging such rates will help SQ?

Comparing airlines based on ticket prices alone is hardly a fair comparison.

The best lesson to learn from is a regret. Why don't you try, whether AI or SQ and see for yourself? I have to say, this isn''t primary 1 mathematics whereby A is equal, greater or less than B.

Ticket prices vary depending on fare conditions (Can flight dates be changed? Can you get a refund on tickets?) as well as dates. Are you comparing like-for-like?

The home carrier in any given city/country can typically charge more for flights out of that location i.e. ex-SIN SQ is typically more expensive because of frequency, connections, and travellers based in SIN who prefer to stick to SQ. (Funny post on TOF recently had someone saying Krisflyer was not a suitable program for US-based flyers. Well duh, of course it's not. It's not geared for US-based flyers.)

SQ positions itself as a premium carrier and many, particularly business travellers, are willing to pay more for SQ.

The difference you mentioned for SIN-MAA i.e. $400+ vs $590 isn't that huge. I've seen even greater price differences between other carriers and SQ on several other sectors.

All that said, I am quite comfortable flying both AI and SQ to India, although I prefer SQ.

OOPS, my bad. I dont consider miles when buying tickets. maybe for those who do, it might be a good deal.

i have flown scoot to chennai before. Everything is fine except the fact that i hate to buy food in a plane. so i dont take scoot anymore.

Hmm with all due respect, seen the reduction of value of miles, the reduced availability of specific types of redemptions, etc... not sure I would support the definition "generous" . It might have been in the past...
Baring in mind that if you are Gold member for instance, you get a way better lounge with LH, than the Gold one at Changi, to name another example.

Don’t see anything wrong looking for the most value for your dollar. This is what keeps markets competitive. But the “value” is subjective depending on individual. So only the TS can answer that question for him/herself

While I also find SQ pricey and getting less value-for-money as other airlines are catching up, I would pony up if SQ’s schedule fits a lot better for me (I’m based in Singapore). To each his own.

Like SQ_326 said, TS should try the different airlines to arrive at his/her own conclusion.

Actually, that old adage doesn't hold up as much as it used to, and that's SQ's problem with their annual figures. The "what you get" on SQ in many cases doesn't match the "what you pay for" but more so in Business to Economy.

Going back to the original post, two things......

1) I took AI a few years ago on their old A320 where their J was only $100 more than SQ's Y and I didn't regret it. Now with AI using B787 it has changed and that price difference is bigger.
2) $590 to MAA isn't so bad as Economy Saver with 50% miles. That's often about the same, or less, than SQ charge to HKG and that flight is less than 4hrs.
