After an engine change, a high power run is performed to ensure everything is running well to release it into service.
However, a test flight or a non-ETOPS flight is required to be flown before an ETOPS aircraft can get its ETOPS status, thus the short hop.
As to why SGB requires an engine change, there could have been some issues or they might be following their policy with their A330s after the SSF incident

      • 9V-SMZ performed her RTO and First Flight on the same day. Interesting to note that this is the first such occurrence for a SQ A350.

I think this would now definitely mean, coupled with recent withdrawals, that the A350 has overtaken the B777 within the fleet.

Wow, I hadn't realized there were so many A350's in the fleet now. This aircraft type seems to be performing well for SQ. A very versatile aircraft, and popular with passengers as well, I think.

The economy class experience on the A350 is excellent: good seats and a very quiet cabin. Less enamoured with A350 PEY compared to SQ's PEY on the 77WR or A380. Haven't yet flown SQ's A350 J yet so will reserve comments on the J cabin until I have.

Yes definitely, the in-service A350 fleet overtook the B777 fleet last month in fact, even before -SWZ was delivered.

                          • SQ620/621, the recent 'additional' daily KIX flight running since April this year, switches to the A350R from 1st January 2020:

                            SQ620 SIN0825-KIX1540 359R EFF01JAN20
                            SQ621 KIX1655-SIN2305 359R EFF01JAN20

Slight timing adjustment then happens in the S20 schedule effective 29th March 2020, however A359R service continues.

So it's new Regional Business Class on all three daily KIX flights next year (edit: with the exception of the brief period of A380 operation).
