There are a few things you should be aware of:
    • Your Dividend Miles account must be at least 12 days old.
    • US Miles are currently sold at USD$0.035/mile. This is up from last year's USD$0.0275/mile -- which was up from the old USD$0.025/mile three years ago.
    • You will be charged an additional 7.5% tax. So you're looking at around USD$0.019/mile.
    • US's Award Chart has gone up a bit recently, so redemptions aren't as rich as they used to be -- but we can say that about every program pretty much.

That said, the deal is still fairly good and up to you. The best value currently is an award (roundtrip only as they do not allow one-way awards) between the USA and North Asia for 90,000 miles in J or 120,000 miles in F via Europe where you are allowed either a stopover at a Star Alliance Hub OR an open jaw. Changes or refunds incur a USD$150 fee. Also note that US now charges a USD$50 booking fee for this particular routing and, if booked within 21 days of departure, a USD$75 expedited ticketing fee.

Is it also true that you can just buy Elite Gold on US for $400?

Decided to follow up on this and found the following:

        http://www.usairways.com/en-US/divid...preferred.html

The table should be of help.

"It's easy to buy up to Preferred. Just decide which level of Preferred status you want, take a look at how many miles or segments you need to qualify for your desired status, then match what you need in the buy up to Preferred fees table. If you're unsure how many Preferred-qualifying miles or segments you've earned this year, log in to your account."
The world's too large a place not to go wandering.

Thanks for this very useful insight.

How does one make a redemption from Singapore? Is there a local number to call or do we have to call USA?

Can we make redemptions on SQ to say Europe, Japan etc on SQ just like with Krisflyer (naturally without any discount)? Is there an award chart to refer to?

Wonder if anyone here has any experience with US Airways redemption?

I think you've been on here long enough to know most of these answers. If not, I've heard US's website might be a good place to start.

This $50 is apparently for 'partner' bookings or so I have been told. Calling the UK number apparently avoids this charge.

I am not a member of either the UA or US programs, so my info might be out of date. But do these two programs not suffer from Starnet blocking when booking *A awards?

Supposedly not any more, but YMMV.

The general consensus I think is LH F is blocked and LX F is only available -1 from what is available for other *A members, so if they have 2 seats available, US can only see 1

Thanks for the info. Any idea about access on SQ?

I have some queries about this.

Referring to Star Alliance members upgrade chart here

                            http://www.usairways.com/pv_obj_cach...leageRates.pdf

How many miles does it take to upgrade from economy to business one way on Singapore-London?

I see one row which says Economy and one row which says Business, so I'm kind of confused.

Also, the partner awards travel, the miles stated is one way or for return? Thanks.

30.000. 'Economy' and 'Business' refers to the class booked, not the class you are upgrading to.
