ATLANTA and EAGAN, Minn., April 14, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSEAL - News) and Northwest Airlines Corporation (NYSE:NWA - News) today announced an agreement in which the two carriers will combine in an all-stock transaction with a combined enterprise value of $17.7 billion, creating America's premier global airline. The new airline, which will be called Delta, will provide employees with greater job security, an equity stake in the combined airline, and a more stable platform for future growth in the face of significant economic pressures from rising fuel costs and intense competition. Small communities throughout the United States will enjoy enhanced access to more destinations worldwide. Customers also will benefit from the combined carriers' complementary route networks, which together will offer people greater choice, competitive fares and a superior travel experience to more cities than any other airline. In addition, combining Delta and Northwest will create a global U.S. flag carrier strongly positioned to compete with foreign airlines that are continuing to increase service to the United States.

The new Delta looks massive! Integration is surely going to be a challenge.

With Delta having a larger prescence at LAX than NWA, the merger would appear to be good news for V-Australia who were going to have a through ticketing arrangement with NWA.

That's a massive new partner for KrisFlyer if the new Delta stays as a partner. Then again, that means more flyers competing for SQ award seats.

That'd be one hell of a gigantic airline! An interesting development to observe for sure.

Not exactly that massive, considering American Airlines actually employs more people than both airlines do combined, and the combined Delta will only just pip AA in terms of fleet size (which I am sure will be reduced after the merger anyway). They will definitely serve alot more destinations and passengers thou...

I hope this triggers the UA-CO merger!

No hubs are to close, nor frequencies to be affected sdince they have very few overlapping routes. More here at the specialist website newglobalairline

I hope it triggers a UA/CO merger too. Hot meals in E+ with Channel 9! United B787s out of New York!

That is the official line, but it may not make sense to keep all their hubs.

I am sort of ambivalent about the merger and will wait to see how it turns out, but do hope that CVG, which is currently DL's second largest hub, remains as one...

You are right about the few overlapping routes, which should make it easier to get the regulatory clearance for the merger.

                  Good luck with that optimism.

I hope this is the case, but I fear no meals in E- without Channel 9, no SWUs, or no CR-1s.
Need to prepare for back-up plan now.

They put much emphasis on the fact that no hubs will close. This is due to employee contracts. Since they've said it, I'm sure it will be written down & signed in ink. New Delta won't be getting out of it.

In the press interview, Memphis (currently a NW hub) was of particular media interest in terms of it's proximety to the Delta fortress hub in Atlanta. However, they said MEM is to remain open since it serves a selection of it's own unique destinations & it is commited to providing the city air service & job oppurtunities.

Scroll down to the bottom of the FAQ on the dedicated newglobalairline website where it gives specific details on each hubs current & future roles.

There's also this website with some interesting graphical information on Delta/Northwest & the rumoured United/Continental

I've been told and sincerely hope that this thing is a LONG time off. NW pilots already shot it down and the NW unions are going to put up quite a fight. Not to mention that several Congressmen are against the merger.

I'm just trying to use up my massive mileage with NW and move on. Hope they load the VA redemptions by July as promised. I think now I'll have to book quite a few C tickets on them...
