  • BA 777 lands short of runway at heathrow

    http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/eu...ent/index.html

Landed several hundred yards short of the threshold at LHR.

Tire marks on the grass, lots of damage on port side trailing edge wings. Undercarriage collapse. Seems no fatalities though.

Could this be the first 777 write off ?

British Airways plane crash lands at LHR

    http://ukpress.google.com/article/AL...SnCK8uZOJpsGAA

Passengers escaped unharmed after a British Airways jet crash landed at Heathrow Airport.

The aircraft appeared to have landed several hundred yards short of the southern runway - and just yards from a busy perimeter road.

The impact wrecked the undercarriage and caused extensive damage to both wings.

3 minor injuries, flight was from BJS to LHR. BA038. 136+crew POB.

Looks (my guess) like RWY 27L

She's sitting on her belly now. Left bogie ripped through the fuselage, right bogie and leg left 200 m behind. Very second hand Rolls under the starboard wing.

This would be the 1st B777 accident/incident and hull loss after almost 12 yrs of safe commercial flight. The BA 777 just crashed landed way short of runway 27L. Thankfully it had a low load of 136 pax and all got out safely with 4 having light injuries - possibly during the evacuation.
Its a surprise to see BA having the dubious distinction of crashing a 777.

As somebody mentioned on another board, all of the people on that flight are lucky to be alive. It could have turned out far worse if it wasn't for the skill of the crew (and an element of good luck) in landing the plane in one piece and then evacuating all the pax so quickly.

Calling it a hull loss right now is premature.

Whilst it may be beyond economical repair, it's not beyond repair.

If I were Boeing? I'd subsidise the cost of repairs to keep the no hull loss record intact.

                    Anyone remember VH-OJH?

Reading TOF, there's a report of all power and avionics failing leading to the plane being a glider ?!?

isnt this the first real 777 accident?

I think the only fatal accident with the T7 up to now was a killed ramper at JFK (accident during refueling). Also I heard that one T7 got scrapped after some ground accident

T7 also had some minor problems like one engine out... but never a real crash, that's correct!
Capslock is cruise control for cool... not!

See you at W:O:A 2010- rain or shine!

I am just thankful that no one was majorly hurt. Kudos to the actions of the crew involved in the incident.

Meanwhile I'd wait patiently for the investigators' report.

It's fair to say that bird has looked better.

The local NIMBY's, never ones to miss on opportunity, managed to get a meeting together last night to discuss how this shows there shouldn't be a third runway !!.

I must say, looking at how the landing gear came up through the wing it's probably a good job it wasn't a 744, otherwise those sitting above the main rear gear would not have had a nice day out.
