  • Holiday at home: PVG-SIN with KA's A320 and CX's B744

Hi everyone! It is now the summer holidays and after a memorable year of schooling and ‘homeworking’, it is now time for some rest and relaxation!!!

At first, we decided to stay in Shanghai for the holidays, but my dad had to attend to a meeting in Singapore, so he asked my brother to tag along with him. My mom booked their flight with Cathay Pacific once again as their fares are always cheaper than other airlines.

The problem was just about to start.

My mom then decided that she also wanted to go back to Singapore so she booked a flight again for us both. We glanced through the flights and the flight my dad and brother were booked in said ‘FULL’. Uh-oh. We then decided to just book another flight that leaves at a later time and go to the airport to see if we could get onto my dad’s flight.
(We booked the ticket 12 hours before the flight, which explains why my dad’s flight was full)

We woke up at 5am for the 7.40 am flight.

    Departures area.

We headed to the Dragonair ticketing services counter and asked if my mom and I could go onto my dad’s flight. The staff was very friendly and told us that although the flight was full, we could go to the stand-by counter and be on stand-by. Then the staff added: “Only for this flight to Hong Kong. You would have to go to the Hong Kong airport’s transfer counter and be on stand-by again.”

If my mom and I could not get onto the Dragonair flight, we would have to wait at the airport for another 2 hours to check-in for the flight we booked on. Thankfully, we made it onto the dragonair flight my dad was on.

We were at the gate 10 minutes later. Boarding had already started, so no time for burger king.

On the way to the gate

Spotted a DL B777-200LR on the way to the gate

    Arriving at the gate

Boarding via the jetway. (It rained heavily during the morning)

    We were onboard at 0718h

    Airline: Dragonair
    Flight number: KA857/CX6857
    Aircraft: A320-200
    Aircraft registration: B-HSG
    Flight time: 1h 50min

    Business Class seat

I was sitting alone in the middle seat as the flight load was 100% in Y.

We took off at 0800 sharp and breakfast was served 30 min later with beverages.

    Breakfast:
Chinese fried noodles with pork and vegetables
    Or
    Omelette with bacon and tomatoes

    With fruits and apple juice

I chose the fried noodles as I’ve read that eggs on flights are bad

I was seated on the second-last row. Took a shot of the wing while my neighbor went to the lavatory

    Lavatory:

I passed the camera to my younger brother seated a few rows in front to take a pic of the wing and to take a vid of the landing. Unfortunately, the landing video was um… how should I put it… quite amateur. That day, I learnt not to ask my brother to take take-off and landing vids again.

The flight passed uneventfully and we were soon disembarking the airplane.

Now, my mother and I had to go to the CX transfer counter to see if we could get onto the flight my dad was on to Singapore. My dad and my bro went to the gate first while my mother and I waited at the transfer counter.

The staff said that we would have to wait for 30 minutes, so she asked us to sit at the waiting area and come back after 30 minutes. If we could not get onto the flight my dad was on, we would have to wait for 4 hours for the next flight to Singapore.

    Now... OFF FOR SOME SPOTTING!

Only a few planes were parked there.

30 minutes passed quickly. I took a look at the FIDS and saw that my dad’s flight was boarding.
We hurried to the transfer counter and YES! They issued us a boarding pass each. We hurried through the security checks and literally ran to the gate. Luckily, the gate was not too far away.

    We were onboard at 1117h

    Airline: Cathay Pacific
    Flight Number: CX739
    Aircraft: B747-400
    Aircraft registration: B-HUG
    Flight time: 3h 50min

As we were walking towards our seats, we saw my father and bro. They waved at us and were very happy that we were on the same flight. They were seated at the middle row, so we asked the other two passengers to move to our seats so that we could seat next to my father and bro.

    Safety card:

        As always, nice TR!
God must have been a ship owner, he placed the raw materials far from where they are needed and covered two-thirds of the earth with water...

We took off 10 minutes after boarding. Take off roll was powerful and longer than most flights.

          Announcement in progress:

          Sorry for the blur pics!

I noticed some seats did not have the warning signs on the cup holder.

          Lunch was served shortly

          Pork with rice
          Or

            Chose the pork with rice

The meal was very filling and quite nice, although it was simple.
Looks like you cannot judge a book by its cover.
After the meal, I decided to take a short nap. I ‘reclined’ the seat and felt that the cushion was very hard. Just like leaning onto plastic. The headrest is very soft and very comfortable, but the headrest on my seat does not ‘recline’ when my seat is ‘reclined’. The headrest just stays there. Is it normal or my headrest is spoilt?

            Cabin shot

While I was waiting outside the lavatory, I saw a steep staircase. There was a sign on the wall that read: Crew rest area, no smoking is allowed. Wow… I didn’t know that the 747’s crew rest area was located at the back of the plane.

I watched a bit of Stuart Little and time flew past quickly because of the IFE.

            Almost reaching SIN

After a rough landing, we taxied to the gate for 15 minutes.

            Seat during disembarkation

            Cabin shot once again

Looking at the wing from the jetway

            Looking back at the plane

After a long and tiring day, we finally arrived in Singapore. I had a lot of ‘first times’ during this trip.

            First time on stand-by
            First time sitting by myself
First time on a CX 747
First time using the new IFE controller

And this concludes my second trip report. The return trip will be posted later too so stay tuned!

Nicely done I used to be a SGean living in China as well. Glad to have moved on to the UK but I do miss being in China sometimes. My Yuan went so much further than the pound.
