SINGAPORE - South Korea's Incheon International Airport was voted the best in the world for 2009 in an annual survey dominated by Asian airports.

The survey, by British-based consultancy Skytrax, covered more than 190 airports and is based on the results from 8.6 million passenger questionnaires completed from 2008 to 2009.

Incheon narrowly beat Hong Kong International Airport, last year's number one which came in second, and Singapore's Changi, which fell to third place this year from number 2 in 2008.

Skytrax said in a statement that the final margins between the top three airports were so narrow that at one stage the company thought it would have a three-way tie for first place in the "World Airport Awards".

"Incheon is an airport that has been in the global top 5 ranking for the World Airport Awards during the past 5-6 years, and it is a great achievement for them to secure this premier mark of customer satisfaction," Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted said.

The survey evaluates traveller experiences across 39 different airport service and products, ranging from check-in, arrivals, transfer through to departure at the gate.

Though...I do think ICN is one hellava airport. Especially when the PA follows you around the lounge and walks you all the way to the 30 gates and onto the plane.

ICN is undoubtedly an excellent airport, but Skytrax is a farce.

As I've said before, there are now so many of these 'awards' available, it's harder to find an airport or airline that hasn't won some sort of award than it is to find ones that have. Skytrax's methodology is so flawed its a joke. Even a noob like me can see that.

I landed into the new wing of Incheon a few weeks back with SQ and it's SO bloody far and so much hassle now to get from/to the new gates. There isn't a huge choice of things to do or places to eat at the new wing either on your way out and i found it a bit dull.

In terms of layout i still can't fault KLIA. The "Z" layout of the terminal and runways always means the taxi is as short as it can be either landing or leaving. The shuttle train to the Annex leaves from the same level as you're on already without the need of going down into hell like Incheon or HK.

The layout of the first floor is a bit screwed up and can lead to a long walk to find the right lounge or place to eat but other than that, it's pretty close to my favourite airport.
