  • BKK airport closed: SQ et al Cancel flights 26 NOV 08

As Im sure most of you are already aware the Suvarnabhumi airport has been taken over by protesters. All flights have been suspended until further notice. This is an incredible situation and SQ have announced that all flights for today to BKK have been cancelled.

Singapore Airlines Cancels Flights to and from Bangkok on 26 November 2008

Singapore Airlines will cancel all its flights to and from Bangkok today due to the deteriorating security situation, and a lack of operational service staff, at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Customers booked on flights today are being contacted to advise that their flights have been cancelled. Efforts will be made to reaccommodate those customers on flights when the security situation stabilises and flights resume.

Customers whose flights have been cancelled should contact their travel agent, or if the booking was made directly with Singapore Airlines, contact any Singapore Airlines Reservations Service Centre (in Singapore, 6223 8888).

Customers and meeters and greeters are advised to stay in touch with flight information via the Company's website (singaporeair.com) via FLIGHT STATUS or by calling the Changi Airport flight information hotline on 1800 542 4422.

An assessment will be made later about flight operations beyond today, and further advice will be issued on the Singapore Airlines website, singaporeair.com, and by way of a media advice.

Singapore Airlines will waive admin fees / penalty for cancellation or rerouting for customers holding confirmed tickets issued prior to 26 November 2008, with a Singapore Airlines flight to Bangkok between 26 November and 07 December 2008, both dates inclusive, to allow customers to cancel or rebook an alternative date of travel until 07 February 2009 in the same class (or pay the difference to upgrade to another class), subject to availability of seats at the time of reservation change.

In the case of rerouting to an alternate Singapore Airlines or SilkAir destination (subject to seat availability), the applicable fare difference / taxes / surcharges will be collected.

Singapore Airlines apologises to customers for the inconvenience caused by this disruption, however seeks the understanding of customers that the security situation in Bangkok necessitates this cancellation in the interests of the safety of operations.

BKK airport is apparently closed, so we should assume that all inbound flights not already in the air are cancelled.

      Thai protesters shut down airport

Hundreds of protesters have taken over the main departure terminal
Flights from Thailand's international airport have been suspended after hundreds of anti-government protesters stormed the building in Bangkok.

At least 3,000 passengers are said to be stranded at Suvarnabhumi airport, with all access roads blocked off.

The demonstrators say they now control the airport, and demand that airlines seek their direct permission to land.

Amazingly TG website has no mention of airport closure, or flight cancellations. Where as SQ and UA does (didn't check any one else's.)

Having lived/worked out of BKK for nearly 5 years, nothing really surprises me about Thai politics. Lets just hope for a peaceful resolution can be found and pray for no more loss of life.

Just read an excellent article in "The Nation", on the implications of PAD closing BKK; link follows

          http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2008...s_30089470.php

I was suppose to go back for 2 months in Jan. via SQ1 to HKG and TG 601 to BKK, and the most exciting thing was suppose to be the plane change on SQ1, but this...

If PAD does intend to close down BKK till the government dissolves, this I fear can get very, very ugly.

Once the situation stabilises (hopefully within the next 2-3 weeks), it will be good to go to BKK. Cheap hotels

The latest that comes in overnight is that Dong Muang is now closed as of midnight last night. Suvarnabhumi remains closed as an estimated 3,000 passengers trapped in the main terminal. Bangkok is now without any operational airport.

Tourists (especially on TG) are now stranded in Phuket as well because there is not enough TG aircraft there to fly to Phuket to pick them up.

Situation is getting worse.... come on PAD, why are you doing that to your country?

This is getting ridiculous. This basically now means Thai Airways ENTIRE operation is stopped. The airline (basically) as of now is no longer operational. The ramifications of this action are very far reaching, not just for tourists and business travellers but how about urgent medical supplies and other items being flown in. Peoples lives are at risk here. I heard the UK govt is sending in special aircraft to evacuate their citizens, Im assuming with military personnel on board. Land of Smiles? Not at the moment....

                      But for how long?
I'm quite comfortable for public protests and demonstrations against governments when they are perceived (rightly or wrongly) to be acting against the best interests of the electoral majority. Hell, we had a demonstration outside an event at work against the management just last night.....
But when it starts to have a detrimental impact upon lives (as opposed to being an inconvenience/irritant), putting people at real risk, generating a human cost (as if members of PAD are qualified ATC's for granting permission to land for aircraft, guding them in etc imagine the headlines if there had been an incident) then any demonstrators start to look wreckless and begin to lose support amongst the population and the international community.
If God had really intended men to fly, he'd make it easier to get to the airport.
