  • One Day Excursion from Glasgow?

In less than 2 weeks, GF and I will be embarking on our AONE3 trip (one of the few times during the year I'll be flying for leisure as oppose to work ) and our first destination where we will overnight is Glasgow. 2 nights is the amount of time we'll be spending in the Scottish town where our mode of transportation will be car rental.

On our first day there, we will be arriving GLA around 10am and we believe the remainder of the day will be more than enough time to discover what the city has to offer. So we have decided that on our second day, where we will have the full day, to explore the areas outside of Glasgow and was wondering if anyone has any place worthy in particular we can go with our rental car where we can go in the morning and come back in the early evening? We can go as far as 3 hours out of town.

The only place I've been to in the country outside of Greater London is Bath, Bristol, and Dover. And with Dover, I didn't really check the place out as it was our beginning/ending point of our cruise to Scandinavia more than 3 years ago. So it should be interesting what I'll get to experience in this neck of the woods. And next month I have a corporate trip to Manchester so I'll be adding dots to the places I have visited in the UK.

I hear Edinburgh is an hour away (by train), but I'll defer to the Scottish experts on that one.

I also hear that it's quite a romantic place to visit. Especially if you find castles romantic?! Not too sure on that one...

I'd definitely recommend Edinburgh too. I personally think its easier to get there by train than drive.

Another option is visit Stirling which isn't far from Glasgow.

I think Stirling is over-rated (same for Loch Lomond).

          Another vote for Edinburgh.

I wouldn't waste the opportunity to drive or take the train to EDI as you can easily fly there from London any time.

Why not drive into the Highlands and visit, for example, Fort William (about 100 miles away from Glasgow) ? Beautiful scenery and many outdoor activities. There's a very nice hotel nearby - Inverlochy Castle - which phaleesy and I stayed in many years ago.

Another idea is to fly from GLA to Orkney, Shetland, the Outer Hebrides etc on Loganair (as per the Island Do's organised by Jenbel to Kirkwall, Barra and Islay).

I would definitely head for the highlands as they are by far my favourite area in Scotland. However as by the end of November the weather is not likely to be great, then Edinburgh might be a better idea.

Is Inverlochy an attraction itself and is it on the way to Fort William? Would be nice if we can combine nature sightseeing along with castle visits on the same day itinerary.

                Thanks again!

                  What about a distillery?

                  Coastal scenery in Ayrshire?

New Lanark if that's your sort of thing (I've not been).

Just explore the Clyde valley in the car.

                  Shipbuilding heritage along the Clyde.

If it's a bad weather day (let's face it!) you could do worse than another day in Glasgow.

Don't go to Edinburgh this time -- you'll need much more than a day trip there.

It's not a tourist attraction itself (it's a hotel) and it's quite near Fort William (3 miles away).

Nearby, there are the ruins of Old Inverlochy Castle and other castles in the area.
