Luggage Recommendations

So I've trawled through here, had a wander around the net in general, even spent 4 hours trawling the major retailers in Manchester on the bank holiday....
I finally bought some Tripp luggage - mainly on price.
Everything seemed ok, even if the carry-on was a tad small at 18litres.
But I've been given grief over this and an ear-bashing on monday, tuesday and now, today, over this. Every attempt is being made to cajole me into taking them back and getting a carry on which measures 52 x 37 x 23.
Which I've repeatedly (to the point where I start to see red) pointed out that, while under the international guides, is over that of SQ themselves.
I've also pointed out that there is a luggage guide size container at the airport, and if you get selected to drop you bag in there and it doesn't fit........my laptop and assorted electronica end up going 13 rounds with the rest of the hold baggage........

So, before my aortic chamber explodes, can I enlist the collective wisdom of SQTalkers to provide some reasonable recommendations for:

Carry-On? - as long the capacity is reasonable - I'd like to be able to use it for my 48hour visit to Kota Kinabalu..... Shoulder straps for carrying a plus.

Hold luggage - must be able to be secured (obviously really) and relatively sturdy. preferably wheeled, for ease of transport.

The following are deemed to have constituted as one piece of cabin baggage:


Trolley Bag - 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm (22" x 16" x 8")

Garment Bag - Dimension not exceeding 115 cm (45") & Thickness not exceeding 20 cm (8")when folded

Briefcase - 50 cm by 40 cm by 25 cm (20"x 16" x 10")

So, given that, and the presence of these luggage size boxes at Manchester (for ascertaining if your carry-on meets the regulations), I thought it would be safer to stay within the measurements for each dimension, rather than playing around with them and going for the overall.......

I can't remember seeing the quoted wording on the SQ website before and if I'm not mistaken it seems to be a new addition.

The SQ maximum size is smaller than the size recommended (but not mandated) by IATA (and which airlines such as BA follow):

Cabin baggage should have maximum length of 22 in (56 cm), width of 18 in (45 cm) and depth of 10 in (25 cm). These dimensions include wheels, handles, side pockets, etc.

So, considered opinion/experience would suggest that, when selecting cabin baggage you:
a) Use the 115cm overall dimension?
or
b) Stay within 55 x 40 x 20 for each relevant dimension?
(i.e. - while 52 x 37 x 23.5 is still within the 115cm, it's over in one area....is this a potential sticking point given the "rules"?)

This has become a major bone of contention in our the house. It shouldn't be. Which only makes it more contentious..........and to think I could spend time obsessing over global warming, the price of bread etc.....

For the sake of domestic harmony, I'd go for the:

52 cm x 37 cm x 23.5 cm

suggested to you even though it's smaller in one dimension than the SQ measurements of:

55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm

but nevertheless fits within the 115 cm overall dimensions and within the (non-mandatory) IATA recommendation of 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm.

I've never seen a SQ specific luggage gauge - I'd imaigne the ones at airports generally conform to the IATA dimensions - and I'd find it hard to imagine that someone from SQ is going to measure your hand luggage with a tape measure and say that one side is 3.5 cm too long.
