I've always been curious about those, and what exactly happened behind the curtains when they're closed.
Well, the reality is less maleficent (or exciting, depending on your point of view *cough* CGK) than what I had imagined.
Flying LX, this was my experience: after a tin foil of Nurofen (ibuprofen) tablets set the alarm off, I was [politely] asked to step into the booth ... the agent put on latex gloves ... the curtain was shut ... and the agent proceeded to do a much less gropey search than the LHR T3 goons, concluding with an understanding, "This is what set it off, sir. Sorry about that!" after I showed him the Nurofen.
If only the LHR goons were this courteous and this discreet. I like an airport that values privacy and efficiency (ok, and hygiene!) as ZRH does. ZRH (along with CPH) remains one of my favorite airports in Europe.
