Can't wait for the W and the 2 aLofts.
Or the new Le Meridien even - looks pretty cool from the pictures.Last edited by KeithMEL; 17 June 2008, 10:38 AM.All opinions shared are my own, and are not necessarily those of my employer or any other organisation of which I'm affiliated to.

Just pulling your leg KeithMEL, you know I'm very conservative with my choice of hotels

Then again it was all I could find that wasn't Louis XVI style, s'pose I did well for a place like PRG.All opinions shared are my own, and are not necessarily those of my employer or any other organisation of which I'm affiliated to.

Are you sure the IC is trendy enough for you? Surely the fact that I'm staying there in the not too distant future brands it as being far too conservative for you

I stayed in Grand Hyatt Erawan and despite the fabulous service, I wish I had stay in IC. The rooms in Grand Hyatt are a bit tired and the lobby can be crowded sometimes.

TBH I never thought much of hotel loyalty programs till I found the W. Going into neutral territory for a bit, something like the Royalton (though it's far more exciting when I stayed there years ago) and Dream Hotel NYC are my idea of the perfect hotel experience. And the W encapsulates all the things I like about these hotels, plus has the functionality of a big chain hotel. I doubt the desk clerk at a 52 room Kelly Hoppen or Ian Schrager property would be able to get me row 3 seats (beside Suzy Menke! )at Mercedes Fashion Week launches...
Anyway from our convos it is not just about hotels that we disagree on, HUGE AL. I have long concluded that we have totally different expectations and priorities when it comes to service etc, cue our JL convo. I think this observation is something that we can safely agree upon.
And going back on topic, I agree with MAN Flyer that the BKK SPG debate will rage on forever, a city blessed with so many fine hotels. In lieu of a chain property that matches the above descriptions (there's the Metropolitan BKK and Dream Hotel BKK but i like my Starpoints ), I go for something as clean-line modern as I can find. There is something for everyone in BKK and it does really depend on your needs and expectations. All opinions shared are my own, and are not necessarily those of my employer or any other organisation of which I'm affiliated to.

Partly due to the approvals of MAN Flyer and jjpb3 above (and partly because it's the cheapest SPG), hello from the Royal Orchid Sheraton.
It seems a nice hotel. I prefer the modern and clean decor of the room to the SGS (which from memory was darker and deliberately old). We were upgraded to the top (28th) floor overlooking the river. The lounge also has good views all around with a small breakfast with a few hot western items (although it describes itself as being a continental breakfast). We were given an IMO tacky dangly floral ring at reception (which made one of us start giggling!) and then escorted up for an in-room checkin. Welcome drinks, fruits and a white choccy elephant.

Glad you like it. It ain't no SGS that's for sure, but with some of the rates they offer it's a nice option for being on the river.
With the boat transfer to Saphan Taksin BTS station it's easy to get around as well.

They are a nice gesture I suppose but a little pointless. Twice I have left mine on the desk and they have chased after me saying 'Excuse me Mr MAN Flyer, you have left this at reception'.

I may give the Plaza Athenee or the Le Meridien a try this weekend, despite what I think are overpriced rates... I know the LM is recently refurb-ed, but it comes with a higher pricetag and it's a little off the beaten track. Then again, Wireless Road's Plaza Athenee is also not that convenient. I'd only be doing this for SPG nights, frankly, and the cheaper option is tempting. Anyone with experience care to comment? I'm not interested in the other SPG properties at this time. 3872 (Plaza) vs 4472 (LM) Thai Baht. Both charge Internet for a fee. Which is a major turn-off. Hmm, just spotted Hilton's Conrad on Wireless Rd also. Edit - nope, hopeless price on the Conrad. Will wait for future KUL stays to top-up the Hilton balance.
