  • Shanghai Recommendations

I've searched for recommendations of things to do in PVG aka Shanghai, and I found a hotel thread, a 'fatty' crab thread (probably 'hairy' crab) but no general things-to-do in Shanghai thread...

So, I have an upcoming 36 hours in PVG, and need some suggestions for:

    -nice bars
-things to do/see apart from eating big xiao long baos (did that on my last trip)
    -restaurants for 'hairy' crabs

Oh, and if any SQTalkers want to say hi/live in Shanghai (not aware of any), feel free to PM or leave a message here...

    So, just about anything, really

    Thanks in advance!

OK. I go to PVG only for work or the F1 GP. I doubt you want to do the GP so I don't know what to recommend you do BUT I'll recommend that you AVOID going up the pearl tower.

Go to lounge on the 80+ floor of the Hyatt near by. For the same price of the admission ticket as the tower, you get a similar view but in much greater comfort PLUS you get served a nice drink. No jostling for space to get a nice view.

      Hi 9V-JKL,

I was thinking of going up to the top of the Jin Mao Tower (Grand, not Park Hyatt) as I skipped it the last time by instead visiting the Park Hyatt Shanghai last year during the mooncake festival (went there to buy mooncakes).

I'll definitely not be there during the F1 season as the trip is scheduled for... *ahem*, sometime rather soon.

I also haven't been into the Oriental Pearl Tower, but everyone generally mentions that it's not fantastic, so fair enough, will skip that.

Having said that, jhm PM-ed (thanks, btw!) a very, very helpful link to another thread elsewhere which has loads of info on Shanghai suggestions, some of which I'll incorporate. I've also decided to give the Waldorf Astoria on the Bund a try so I'll report back with impressions on that post-stay. Don't think anyone's made any real comments about it yet and I've been musing about how to pay it a visit for the last year since I missed its opening by a few days on my last trip to Shanghai.

36 hours. Wow. haha. Char Bar at Hotel Indigo on the Bund - great place (imho) and magnificent terrace with a marvelous view.

The best thing to do in Shanghai is leave, imho.

I was there again last Friday, and I still cannot get myself to like the place. I was staying in the Park Hyatt again, and that is undoubtedly a nice hotel but I am always clock watching until it's time to leave. Granted it's probably me that doesn't 'get' Shanghai, but I've been six or seven times now and have accepted it just isn't for me.

For a quick one on drinks, we found ourselves in a bar in one of the towers at the Shangri-la (BATS has closed, apparently...) which was surprisingly nice, and of course you have the bars in the Grand and Park Hyatt.

Is there anything reminiscent of 'Xie' in Beijing in Shanghai? Quite like 'Xie'...

Been once to 'M on the Bund', that was good and might head there as the vibe is very much like 'Xie'. Hotel bars aren't exactly what I have in mind for a one-night-in-Shanghai nightspot... cheers!
